Many thanks to Paul, Mark, Beth, Andreus & Dmitry Many thanks to Paul, Mark, Beth, Andreus & Dmitry for harvesting our YQ population wheat this last week - it's all destined for the @wakelynsbakery.

Harvest was more complicated than usual this year because of our 'YQ coming home' trials.

This year we've not only grown YQ population wheat from seed that has only ever been grown at Wakelyns (since the inception of the YQ in 2021), we've also grown YQ from seed which left Wakelyns and has been growing on each of three other farms over the last few years (many thanks to them for their help).

We wanted to see whether their different performance and characteristics of the YQ as grown on those sites would be replicated when we brought the seed 'home'.

Who knows? Many people have theories about how the diaspora YQ has evolved (or not).

Anyway, early indications are that they are all quite different - what are we to make of that?

More information of the background via the link in our bio.

Later in the year we will do some proper tests and measurements, checking yields, milling, baking, flavour and more.

A bit of citizen science?

Watch this space!

Wakelyns is buzzing - The bees are emerging and th Wakelyns is buzzing - The bees are emerging and the whole site is alive with early pollinator action.

The ley alleys in our organic rotation provide the perfect habitat for ground nesting bees, and the abundance of blossom in our diverse agroforestry systems helps these efficient pollinators thrive throughout the year!

Did you know that a large majority of bee species live underground? These solitary bees, unlike socialable honeybees and bumblebees, only have one individual that lays eggs and tends to the nest or burrow, making them vulnerable to pressures that could harm their survival.

Rosy and Nick, researchers from the University of Reading have been here all week, and were lucky enough to catch a newly hatched bee emerging from the soil. This solitary bee will have spent all winter in the soil growing into a super pollinator. It's wet as it's just come out of it's pupae, and is buzzing it's wings around to dry them off and generate heat before it can fly.

They believe this one is a grey-patched mining bee, a common solitary bee which collects pollen from a wide variety of flowers including cherry blossom, willow and dandelion.

Come visit us on 20-21 May - more information via the link in our bio. Lots of other agroforestry sites all over UK Ireland and beyond open that weekend too!

Or come and stay in one of our Ley Alley Pods - be right in the centre of the action. Link in our bio.

Agroforestry wine comes to Wakelyns! Last week a Agroforestry wine comes to Wakelyns!

Last week and this we have added vines to our agroforestry system. We were inspired by a visit from a Dutch farmer who had tackled the airborne disease problem suffered by conventional (dense planted) vineyards by planting her rows of vines a long way apart with wheat in 'alleys' in between.

North Field at Wakelyns is characterised by tree lines with only a single line of trees in each tree line (others have two) and with larger gaps between the trees. So we've now filled the gaps between the trees in the tree lines with little groups of vines!

We hope that the even lower density of vines in the field will make airborne diseases even less of a problem (important in our organic system). And we are this way also making use of patches of land that were previously just grass in between the trees. So any wine we get (from about 3-4 years time, we hope) is a productivity bonus within our already-diverse agroforestry system.

We are planting a total of 1050 vines from 3 white varieties (Solaris, Muscris and Souvignier Gris) and 3 red (Rondo, Carbnet Cortis and Divico). It was great to have some help from visiting students from Central St Martins.

Come and have a look over Agroforestry Open Weekend (20-21 May). Details of what's on and how to register to visit Wakelyns via the link.in our bio.

And of course, it's not just us open that weekend. Visit 40 agroforestry sites in the UK, Ireland and beyond that weekend. More info via @agroforestryopenweekend #agroforestryopenweekend

There's lots happening @wakelyns at the moment! S There's lots happening @wakelyns at the moment!

Suffolk Wildlife Trust's contractors have just dug us two new ponds to encourage Turtle Doves and Great Crested Newts;  Charles Dowding held a teach-in on 'no dig' vegetable growing the other week;
students from the Architecture Association School of Architecture's Landscape Urbanism course visited; the team from Gaia's UK and Ireland Seed Sovereignty Programme came for 3 days for their NGO retreat last week; Natural England paid for 20 farmers and others to attend a course on Soils run by Farm-Ed at Wakelyns also last week; and last weekend, Fay Jones, Woodland Haberdasher ran a course on hazel fence making so we now have a lovely fence near one of the new ponds.

And with spring now properly in the air, we have lots coming up!

Learn to weave a willow basket, a child's chair or bird feeder with Adam & Emma from Willow Phoenix (something most weekends); join Steve Piotrowski & Harry Read for a Dawn Chorus Bird Walk on 7 May (World Dawn Chorus Day); or a Wakelyns Tree Walk with Paul Jackson, same day; Fay Jones, Woodland Haberdasher has events in the Wakelyns diary up to May; and then it's Agroforestry Open Weekend across the UK, Ireland and beyond - we at Wakelyns will be open on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 May (booking essential please).

Following the success of their 2021 pond restorati Following the success of their 2021 pond restoration project @wakelyns Suffolk Wildlife Trust have applied for planning permission to create two new ponds at Wakelyns in 2023.

One will involve digging out a pond that was filled in many years ago, the other a brand new pond using a length of #agroforestry alley which is too small to farm practically.

This is all part of supporting and enhancing our Great Crested Newt habitats.

And it's being done in conjunction with the local team from the RSPB turtle dove project so that we maximise the extra habitat for our small but growing population of these rare and declining birds.

The work is scheduled for February 2023. We'll post more information then. Meanwhile details of the planning application are via the link in our bio.

Community Apple Day 2022 @wakelyns was such fun! Community Apple Day 2022 @wakelyns was such fun!

230+ people enjoyed apple walks, willow weaving, crafts, juicing, delicious food from @wakelynsbakery, and much more.

Our most successful event yet, with a lovely warm and relaxed atmosphere, helped along by the glorious autumn weather. The Wakelyns team did brilliantly - thanks all!
