Welcome to Wakelyns Nature

Harry Read has already been leading Wakelyns Bird Walks in 2023 and 2024. We are delighted that, for 2025, he will be established as the latest Wakelyns enterprise: Wakelyns Nature. So as well as Bird Walks, he will be doing a range of other projects here including nature photography and other events and courses.

Harry moved to the Arctic Circle to work as a photographic guide teaching people how to photograph the northern lights in the stunning Abisko National Park before organising photo tours to Finland, in search of the Brown Bear. His project GoneFeral has delivered filming & photography projects for MPB, Ford Iceland, the Save Windermere campaign and featured as part of a 10 page cover-feature on Puffins in BBC Wildlife Magazine. Latterly, Harry was the Ecologist on an 8,000 acre estate in his home county of Suffolk. Although a general naturalist with a relatively broad species group knowledge, Harry specialises in ornithology and regularly teach bird identification in the UK. See more about his photography at Harry Read Photograpy. It’s great to welcome him here as Wakelyns Nature.

Harry’s Bird Walks at Wakelyns

The full day Wakelyns Bird Walks are designed for absolute beginners to more experienced bird watchers with a focus on woodland & garden birds. Even those that struggle to confidently separate Blue Tits from Great Tits will take a lot from this course. We’ll spend the day walking around and exploring Wakelyns’ unique agroforestry areas, discussing identification techniques which highlight bird behaviour, shape, plumage, songs and calls, the key to enhancing learning experiences.

Each day will start early, to get the best of the birds, with a lunch break – with a delicious lunch from the Wakelyns Kitchen included.

£50 per person, or £25 for people on low incomes – Morning coffee and lunch included.

The course will involve a series of complementary activities to ensure you become familiar with the identification and behaviour of birds which are seen.  These will include:

  • Watching birds from a distance in the various habitats
  • Viewing birds around Wakelyns
  • Learning the art of Field-craft
  • Learning key visual clues to help you identify species by sight
  • Learning key songs and calls to help you identify species by sound

We also run one hour ‘taster walks’ during some of our community/open days.
