Thanks Larissa for this lovely video of last weekend's Wakelyns Community Apple Day. We had lots of fun, as you can see.

Larissa has been staying in one of our caravans while volunteering at Wakelyns for the last few weeks, helping out with the veg growing, in the bakery, with Wakelyns events and lots more. Some people come to learn new skills, others to see organic agroforestry in action, others just to do
stuff outdoors in a lovely place.

We aim to be a welcoming and friendly place based around Commitments and Values set out on our website. But the realities of mud and aged caravans limit it spring to autumn. Get in touch via our website if you fancy joining us in 2025.

🌸WILD WEAVING WORKSHOP🌸

@kittywilsonbrownart invites you to come to @Wakelyns for a two day course, learning to naturally dye yarn and weave a tapestry.

On the first day, October the 12th, you will learn how to dye yarn such as hemp, flax and wool using plants from Kitty’s natural dye garden including indigo, coreopsis, marigold and hemp leaf. After lunch we sit down to design our tapestry with the colours we’ve produced.

On the second day, October the 19th, after learning basic weave and tapestry techniques you will create your own design, using your own dyed yarn.

Lunch will be included on both days, using produce that is organically grown on the agroforestry farm.

The Turtle Doves are back! At least two males ar

The Turtle Doves are back!

At least two males arrived this weekend at Wakelyns. More on the way - we hope: We had four pairs nesting here in 2023.

They've arrived just in time for World Dawn Chorus Day. Join us for a Wakelyns Bird Walk next Sunday, 5 May (5.30 am start!).

Join experts Steve Piortrowski @piotrowski.steve and Harry Read @harryreadphoto for a lovely few hours in our agroforestry alleys and fields to relish and learn about the sounds and sights of this special event.

What's more, the weather forecast is looking good for a lovely occasion.

Also on Sunday 5 May, the first Wakelyns Tree Walk of 2024. Join Paul Jackson (not on Instagram!), Wakelyns' expert arborist for nearly 20 years. 10 am start. Paul's knowledge and enthusiasm for our many special trees is unsurpassed. Here's feedback from a Tree Walk last year:

“I am still on ‘a high’ from Paul’s wonderfully informative day on Sunday. He is simply amazing, sharing his passion and rich knowledge. And as for seeing more hares in one day than I have seen in a long-ish lifetime, I was over the moon. I shall be looking for an excuse for my 5th visit …! Henrietta’s lunch was brilliant and the ambiance out in ‘plein aire’ was just right.”

Ann, Martin, David & Toby Wolfe planted the first

Ann, Martin, David & Toby Wolfe planted the first agroforestry tree lines at Wakeyns in March 1994 - 30 years ago this month.

Photo 2 is how it looked like in 1993, before we started - one big field with one variety of wheat growing: no diversity, no biodiversity, windswept and sun-dried. Photo 1 is the original planting taking place.

Photos 4 & 5 are in exactly the same area of the farm last summer (including hemp from @contemporaryhempery).

All that makes Wakelyns one of the longest established most diverse agroforestry sites.

Photo 3 is the original record of the apple varieties from March 1994. Planting then in lines in that wheat field was regarded then as eccentric and even foolish (certainly by the farming establishment). It’s about to become mainstream!

In its 2023 Carbon Budget Delivery Plan (the climate change policy document which says how the UK will reach Net Zero by 2050), the UK Government newly committed to 10% of arable land being agroforestry by 2050. That will be a big change in the landscape and to farming: lots of carbon dioxide sequestered and lots of new habitats.

Meanwhile, DEFRA recently announced it will fund agroforestry with payments – under the new Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) subsidies scheme – of up to £849 per hectare for farmers to maintain agroforestry. Much better than the old BPS way of paying a flat rate of about £250 per hectare regardless of what farmers chose to grow.

Finally, don't forget @agroforestryopenweekend now in its 4th year, with sites open across the UK, Ireland and beyond over 17-20 May 2024! We had 37 open last year. More for 2024. Visit an agroforestry site near you! Here's a map (taken from www.agroforestryopenweekend.org with a snapshot - more sites being added over the next few weeks.

Two great festive willow weaving events at Wakelyn

Two great festive willow weaving events at Wakelyns this month: Saturday 25th November - Festive Angels; Saturday 2nd December - Festive Wreaths, Stars and other fun willow decorations. All from Adam and Emma - Willow Phoenix at Wakelyns!

25th: Learn to make an angel lantern with willow and lantern paper.
Beautiful when lit up. Perfect indoors or out. After a delicious Wakelyns Bakery lunch, we’ll also show you how to make a living willow angel to plant at home.

2nd: Create 3 beautiful, sustainable decorations for your festive season.
We’ll be making wreath frames and star frames, which we’ll decorate with materials we have foraged from the farm. As we craft, we’ll talk through some tree lore, take a peek at the Celtic Tree Wheel of the year and accompanying tree runes to add some magic to your work. Try your hand at pyrography to create some extra adornment. For the final project of the day, we’ll weave a festive star, perfect for a tree topper.

Each course comes with tea, coffee, biscuits, cake and delicious lunch made by Henrietta @wakelynsbakery. A selection of wonderful festive treats from the Bakery is available on the day.

And a special pop-up: the Wakelyns Bakery Christmas Pop Up Shop!
During each day, you will also be able to buy delicious delights, which also make super Christmas gifts, from Wakelyns Bakery – Mixed and single variety apple juice and cider vinegar; jams, chutneys, pickles, and squash squash; granola; biscuits and more!
All made with the organic fruit and vegetables grown just on the bakery’s doorstep in the arable crop and tree alleys of the agroforestry system at Wakelyns, and from other agroecological farming friends.

Join us to learn from the Meer Bomen Nu team (from Holland!) about sapling harvesting as the launchpad for lots of tree planting to help tackle climate change and support nature. (Their name means More Trees Now!)

They'll be with us on the afternoon of Friday 24 November and the morning of Saturday, 25 November, as the first stop on their 2024 tour of UK and Ireland.

It's a great opportunity for anyone interested in helping plant lots of trees - in the community, in your garden or on your farm!

Everyone welcome whether you are a novice or an expert! It should be lotsof fun and plenty to learn.

It's free to come along, but registration is essential please.

Each day, Henrietta from @wakelynsbakery will be offering a delicious lunch - booking ahead required. And she'll be opening her pop-up festive shop offering lots of lovely Wakelyns food and drink goodies and more.

Many thanks to Paul, Mark, Beth, Andreus & Dmitry for harvesting our YQ population wheat this last week - it's all destined for the @wakelynsbakery.

Harvest was more complicated than usual this year because of our 'YQ coming home' trials.

This year we've not only grown YQ population wheat from seed that has only ever been grown at Wakelyns (since the inception of the YQ in 2021), we've also grown YQ from seed which left Wakelyns and has been growing on each of three other farms over the last few years (many thanks to them for their help).

We wanted to see whether their different performance and characteristics of the YQ as grown on those sites would be replicated when we brought the seed 'home'.

Who knows? Many people have theories about how the diaspora YQ has evolved (or not).

Anyway, early indications are that they are all quite different - what are we to make of that?

Later in the year we will do some proper tests and measurements, checking yields, milling, baking, flavour and more.

We were UK pioneers in growing lentils in conjunction with @hodmedods from 2015.

Join us for a fun day to eat, learn about and cook lentils, dal and more. We’ll be using our 2022 lentil harvest of Coral, Rosanna and Black Lentils, with our 2023 crop out in our agroforestry alleys.

Wakelyns is on BBC Countryfile on Sunday 9 July 8pm (and then repeated and on iplayer). They came to film a couple of weeks’ ago but we can only tell you now. They filmed a lot but of course we don’t know how long we get or what they show. All good fun.

Our agroforestry was established in 1994 - one of the oldest and most diverse alley cropping examples. Come and see how it has evolved and what we do with it.

Learn about everything at Wakelyns: organic,agroforestry, short food chains, enterprise stacking, people, research.

Meet the RealVeg CSA horticuture team and Adam & Emma from Willow Phoenix.

There’ll be fun stuff for kids (face painting, crafts and the like) and, of course, delicious food from the Wakelyns Bakery including lovely lunches.

Paul J, our long term expert arborist will talk trees to you.

Paul W will help with the practical side of farming with agroforestry.

Claire will enthuse you about her Contemporary Hempery project at Wakelyns and Gill can show you how she looks after the wild bees at Wakelyns.

We will also be joined by some of the team from the Organic Research Centre who will be explaining their work at Wakelyns, including how we are now (through them) part of an EU wide project studying the long term impacts of agroforestry at 8 of the most established sites across Europe.

And of course our star annual visitors - the Turtle Doves! In full voice at the moment and, with their favourite trees not yet in leaf, you'll likely hear and see them right around our farmyard.

PS UK, Ireland, Costa Rica and Finland is a great start for 2023. Next year we hope to go properly global!

Probably our best World Dawn Chorus event yet this

Probably our best World Dawn Chorus event yet this weekend - highlight was at least 3 pairs of turtle doves (we think they might have been the first in Suffolk this year). So loud they almost drowned out the other birds (not quite!). Thanks to Steve Piotrowski and Harry Read for sharing your expertise.

And of course, another delicious @wakelynsbakery lunch enjoyed by the birders as well as the group here for a Tree Walk with Paul Jackson and those weaving bird feeders with Adam and Emma from Willow Phoenix.

We've another day of Bird Walks, Tree Walks, and Willow Weaving on June 18th.
