Saturday 6 April
Nestled within the leafy embrace of Wakelyns Organic Farm in the heart of Suffolk, our festival taster day invites you to step into a world where creativity, mindfulness, and nature intertwine. Let your senses awaken to a realm of possibilities. Here, the rhythm of life is set by the gentle sway of willow branches and the soothing hum of the pottery wheel.
We have collected the very best green crafters to bring you a joyous and inspiring day of workshops…. Saturday’s events will connect you to nature and free you to create….
There are 2, 3 hour creative sessions in the day, just choose which you prefer. The Children’s Area will be running all day. There will be plenty of time to explore the farm, relax and reconnect.
Carolyn – Magic Mirrors
Design & create your own unique mosaic Magic Mirror’
Exploring colour and mosaic techniques to decorate wooden base, using recycled treasure such as broken china, buttons etc as well as natural materials. We will be using wooden roundels from the agroforestry at Wakelyns.
Willow Phoenix – Dream Weaving
We have been working and teaching at Wakelyns for the last 3 years with all things willowy. We are pleased to introduce to you our Dream-Weaving course, which we have been thinking about for several years. In this session we will be creating a Celtic frame basket of your choice, whilst we discuss; ‘What is manifesting?’ and ‘How can it make our lives better?’ Starting with our baskets.
We will ‘Connect with Nature’ and our materials by harvesting some fresh willows. We’ll talk about how the process of coppicing our materials is harmonious with the seasons and nature’s cycles and how sustainable the products we make are. Coppicing shows us that we are very much a part of nature and that we can work in synchronicity with it.
You will be able to choose from a variety of pre-made frames, made from Wakelyns willow. There will be Berry Baskets, Leaf Trays, Henny Penny Baskets, Trugs, Buttocks Baskets and Swills. Pick a frame that makes you happy and is useful in your life. We’ll teach you a randing weave to fill out your frame.
While we weave, there will be plenty of time to talk about manifesting, while we immerse in the notion of the innterconnectedness of…well, everything. We’ll demonstrate a method for manifesting and provide resourses for your own further practice. We are all powerful Co-Creators.
Jason Parr – Spoon Carving
Jason is a talented musician, sculptor and poet, based at Ashby Arts, the business he created. Here Jason offers a range of creative workshops including wood working and bronze casting. We are delighted that Jason will be joining us for 2 carving workshops; butter knives and spoons. Under Jason’s expert tuition you will be using green wood from Wakelyns and a range of carving tools, you will create your own take home piece. Jason will be joining us around the campfire for a song and a poem or two.
Eve – Pottery
Hello, my name is Eve. I have worked with clay since 2016. I first learnt the basics from a lovely lady in France. This was a ten day intensive course and it set me up for my future journey of continued learning. My workshop is now in the seaside town of Lowestoft where I am fortunate enough to spend most of my time creating pieces.
As with all things, my work is in a constant state of change. I throw on a wheel primarily but also hand build sometimes also. Much love and have fun.
In our session we will be creating pots with the pinch pot method and with the kick wheel. Engage with the Earth element and be open to receive.
Farm Yard Children’s Area
Running drop in workshops all day, the Farmyard Children’s Area is close to the amenities and the meadow, were kids can run free and play in the shade of the trees and build dens. Adults are welcome, but must be accompanied by a child. All of our workshops source materials from the farm. Would you like to build a Bug Hotel or a Clay Creature? Maybe after that some weaving and Lantern Making.
BEE AND LADYBIRD HOTELS will be running in the morning.
A home for the solitary Bee and Ladybird. Involves some basic woodworking to make the structure. Using hollow stemmed plants along with a pine cone to make a 5 star accomodation. A workshop for ages 7+
CLAY CREATURES will be running in the afternoon.
It’s a workshop inclusive for all ages. The workshop uses natural clay to form the basic shape of the animal. A variety of different seedheads are added for the animal’s features (fur, tails, wings etc)
Willow Phoenix Kids Workshops
Weaving a simple, lovely Tension Tray is a activity suitable for all ages, it’s up to you if you turn it into an owl or a fish. A gentle, mindful activity lasting about half an hour.
Lantern Making is great fun! Create your willow shape and cover with paper. Decorate. The magic happens when you light them at night.
We’ll have a fire each night with our evening meal in the farm yard. On Saturday night we have Jason Parr with some poetry, Hodmedod will be our Ceilidh band and Tree will be our DJ.
Hodmedod Ceilidh Band “Skirt swirling, toe tapping trad tunes and country dances. Folk meets disco in unexpectedly joyful genre collisions” Line Up; Katy Fullilove, fiddle; Paul Keeler, fiddle; Carol Hunter, Piano; Les chappell, percussion; John Preston, Bass and calling and Brian Eade (not in pic), Guitar.
We are so excited to have booked an incredible DJ & artist – Tree Gilroy, also known as DMTree.
Tree takes music beyond DJing- she has a deep inbuilt love of the sounds, and the tech know-how to tweak those beats to perfection.
For the last 7 years, Tree has been residency at the month-long Tribal Gathering Festival in Panama, can also be spotted behind the decks on the Cirque de la Quirk stage at the Isle of Wight Festival
Expect an immersive experience as she weaves her tunes into the night, curating a sonic journey for our guests.
